GLP-1 guidance for adults over 65 stresses strength training and care-team support
UNC Health published advice for adults 65 and older considering GLP-1 drugs. Its geriatrician warned about muscle and bone loss and recommended strength training and care-team support.

UNC Health published guidance on Nov. 5 for adults 65 and older considering GLP-1 medication. Batsis said GLP-1s had mostly been tested in adults under 65, and older adults lacked specific use guidelines.1
He warned that weight loss could add to age-related muscle and bone loss, raising risks of frailty, falls and disability. He recommended balanced eating, hydration and regular activity, including strength training, especially for adults over 65.1
Batsis said GLP-1 care should involve a doctor, dietitian and exercise specialist, such as a personal trainer or physical therapist. Older adults might need slower dose increases, while doctors monitor their response and adjust treatment.1
