Tailored exercise may support muscle during GLP-1 treatment, ACSM commentary says
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) said clinical exercise physiologists should tailor activity to each patient’s health needs and risks. Its commentary said progressive resistance training alongside GLP-1 therapy could limit lean-mass loss and improve physical function.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) published a commentary on Nov. 4 about clinical exercise physiologists’ role in obesity-drug care. It said an international statement urged clinical exercise physiologists to tailor activity to each patient’s conditions, medications and risks.1
The commentary said progressive resistance training alongside GLP-1 therapy could limit lean-mass loss and improve physical function compared with medication alone. It also said exercise plans should reflect patients’ goals and health conditions, rather than focus only on calorie burning.1
For gym operators, the piece framed this work as clinical care, not a generic call to move more.1
