University of Auckland professor backs exercise in obesity drug care
University of Auckland professor Nicholas Gant said progressive resistance training should accompany obesity medicines. He said exercise during treatment could help preserve muscle and physical function as weight fell.

University of Auckland professor Nicholas Gant said exercise, particularly progressive resistance training, should be part of care for people using obesity medicines.1
The article said current evidence indicated that 20% to 40% of rapid pharmacological weight loss may come from non-fat tissue, including skeletal muscle. Gant wrote that exercise alongside therapy could protect muscle, improve physical function and produce healthier body-composition changes than medicine alone.1
He also said clinical exercise physiologists should be embedded in obesity care to assess risk, measure function, and prescribe and progress exercise.1
