World Insurance updated its guide for fitness businesses on employee and contractor classification on Nov. 5, 2026.1

The guide said paying a trainer as a contractor or issuing a 1099 did not by itself decide worker status; the actual working relationship mattered. It pointed to business control over direction, finances and work arrangements, and noted federal and state tests could differ.1

The guide said misclassification could create tax, employment, workers’ compensation and insurance concerns for fitness businesses.1
