Latvia sets fines for unqualified sports coaches
Latvia’s new law provides €50–€300 fines for leading sports training without required qualifications, with penalties scheduled to start June 1, 2027. The Latvian Sports Federations Council also wants stricter continuing professional development oversight and plans compulsory topics that include professional ethics.

Latvia’s new law provides for fines of €50 to €300 for leading sports training sessions without the required qualifications, Latvian Public Broadcasting reported. The penalties are due to take effect on June 1, 2027, after a transition period; the qualification requirements were already in force.1
The Latvian Sports Federations Council also wants tighter oversight of coaches’ continuing professional development. Coaches must complete specified courses to renew certificates, and the Council plans to add compulsory subjects such as professional ethics, including the treatment of children and limits on physical contact.1
The report said sports training leaders generally need appropriate qualifications, usually evidenced by a coaching certificate, with limited exceptions for some graduates and students. The June 2027 start date makes credential compliance a near-term operational concern for trainers and the organizations employing them.1
