Zenoti said its May 2026 survey of 1,393 U.S. gym and health-club members found 67% joined after a personal recommendation, rising to 78% among those who became regulars. The survey also found that 73% of regulars at least sometimes purchased a recommended add-on or upgrade.

Zenoti published the findings on October 29 from its 2026 Fitness Consumer Survey, which it said was conducted in May among 1,393 U.S. gym and health-club members.1
It reported that 67% of members joined because someone they knew recommended the gym, a share that rose to 78% among respondents who became regulars. Zenoti also found that 73% of regulars purchased a recommended add-on or upgrade at least sometimes.1
For gym operators, the results offered a member-acquisition benchmark and a data point on regular members’ response to recommended add-ons.1
