USA Triathlon shifts state championships to a season-long series in 2027

USA Triathlon will replace single-race state championships with a season-long series in 2027. Athletes must complete at least three qualifying races, including one in their home state, and maintain an active annual membership.

USA Triathlon said on Oct. 27 that it would replace single designated state championship races with a season-long State Series Championship in 2027. The series will include eligible sanctioned triathlons and off-road triathlons across all 50 states, and scores from races during the season will feed a statewide ranking.1

Athletes must complete at least three sanctioned triathlons or off-road triathlons in the calendar year, including at least one in their state of residence, and hold an active USA Triathlon annual membership as of Dec. 31. Rankings will use the average of each athlete’s three highest qualifying race scores, and athletes can earn points toward their home-state ranking by racing anywhere in the country.1

At season’s end, the organization said it would recognize the top three athletes in each age group by gender and the top three overall athletes by gender in every state.1
