PAR-Q+
PAR-Q+ is a health screening questionnaire clients complete before increasing activity to identify a need for further medical screening.
PAR-Q+ (Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire for Everyone) is a health screening tool developed in Canada that asks clients to recall signs, symptoms and diagnosed conditions.Schoenfeld and Snarr (eds.), NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed., p. 155. It begins with seven general health questions, followed by additional questions for anyone who answers yes.Ozemek et al., ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 12th ed., p. 145.
It’s inexpensive and easy to administer, identifying clients who need more medical screening without excluding those who could benefit from low-intensity activity.Schoenfeld and Snarr (eds.), NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed., p. 155. It assesses whether exercise is safe rather than cardiovascular risk, so it doesn’t fully capture risk factors, medications or contraindications.Schoenfeld and Snarr (eds.), NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed., p. 155.
In practice
- Pair it with a fuller health history questionnaire.Schoenfeld and Snarr (eds.), NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed., p. 155.
- A yes on a follow-up question means the client should seek more information before increasing activity, through the online ePARmed-X+ or a qualified exercise professional.Schoenfeld and Snarr (eds.), NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed., p. 179.
- A completed form is valid for up to 12 months and becomes invalid if the client’s health changes.Schoenfeld and Snarr (eds.), NSCA’s Essentials of Personal Training, 3rd ed., p. 177.
